 OPEN DOOR

The Open Door program, which began in 1991, is a program designed to meet the needs of developmentally disabled older adults. The main goal of the program is to bring the participants into the community in order to integrate them into existing programs. Part of this process also includes developing activities specifically for this group and opening the activities to other adults, many of whom are marginal in their ability to function. Being housed at the site of the Fort Washington Houses Multi-Service Senior Center affords the members of the Open Door an opportunity to engage in outings, parties and other large group activities, which enhance social skills. The Open Door Program meets Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 2:00pm. Transportation is available for this program. We are wheelchair accessible as well. Activities, including recreation, trips, education, socialization and physical fitness are geared to the target population. A strong effort is made to mainstream participants into the senior center program, including the daily hot lunch. Independence within the setting is encouraged.
