Each year, our Social Services department assists over 1000 clients with mental health screenings, eviction prevention, money management and benefits counseling.

In 2020, Riverstone celebrates 35 years of helping seniors in northern Manhattan stay vibrant, healthy and engaged. In 1985 we began with a senior center and have grown, addressing the needs of the community, to the multi-service agency you know today.

Case Studies

Mr. R. gets help with poor sight

Mr. R is 72 years old and immigrated from Argentina to the United States in his 20s.  He has never been married and has no children. He lives alone in a one-bedroom apartment in Morningside Heights.  Mr. R is visually impaired and suffers from several medical conditions, including depression, COPD and a heart condition.

Ms. P. finds new support system

Ms. P, one of 4 siblings, was born in the Dominican Republic.  She worked as a nurse assistant at a local medical clinic for several years.  At 20 years old, she met and married her husband and together they had four children.  Her husband was a carpenter who made furniture.

Ms. D. is a client and volunteer

Ms. D is 79-year-old immigrant from Puerto Rico who is divorced and lives alone in public housing in Central Harlem.  Prior to her retirement she worked for the Bronx Botanical Garden, and for the past several years has been volunteering and attending activities at Riverstone’s Senior Center.
